What is Bullying and is it Happening at Your School?

Bullying consists of ongoing threats, physical attacks, words, gestures, or social exclusion directed at a student or students by a student or group of students who are older, bigger, or more powerful. bullying school assemblies

There are a lot of bullies in elementary school, and for every bully there is at least one victim, according to a snapshot of a West Coast school system. In all, about 22% of school children are involved. Bullying is an early warning that bullies may be headed toward more serious antisocial behavior. Moreover, victims of repeated bullying can explode in ways that threaten not just the bullies but many others as well.
Most bullying behavior develops in response to multiple factors in the environment—at home, school and within the peer group. There is no one cause of bullying. Most bullying takes place in and around school and is often reinforced by an audience. In one study, 120 hours of video surveillance in northern schools showed that in over 20 percent of bullying, peers actively reinforced bullying by physically or verbally joining in the aggression. In 54 percent of cases, they reinforced the bully by watching but not joining in.

In only 25 percent of cases did peers support the victim. Another study in the Midwest found that a clear majority of students felt that victims were at least partially responsible for bringing the bullying on themselves. Students surveyed tended to agree that bullying toughened a weak person, and some felt that bullying "taught" victims appropriate behavior.
Clearly bullying is a problem and it is our responsibility as adults and role models to educate students on the wrongfulness of bullying peers. Perfection on Wheels is a positive and interactive school program that can help your students battle bullying a fun, efficient and effective manner!

Recent Statistics Show That:

  • Bullying is the most common form of violence in our society; between 15% and 30% of students are bullies or victims.

  • A recent report from the American Medical Association on a study of over 15,000 6th-10th graders estimates that approximately 3.7 million youths engage in, and more than 3.2 million are victims of, moderate or serious bullying each year.

  • 1 out of 4 kids is Bullied. The American Justice Department says that this month 1 out of every 4 kids will be abused by another youth.

  • In a recent study, 77% of the students said they had been bullied mentally, verbally, & physically. And 14% of those who were bullied said they experienced severe (bad) reactions to the abuse.

  • 1 out of 5 kids admits to being a bully, or doing some "Bullying."

  • 8% of students miss 1 day of class per month for fear of Bullies.

  • 282,000 students are physically attacked in secondary schools each month.

  • Playground statistics - Every 7 minutes a child is bullied. Adult intervention - 4%. Peer intervention - 11%. No intervention - 85%

What Can Schools Do?

Today, schools typically respond to bullying, or other school violence, with reactive measures. However, installing metal detectors or surveillance cameras or hiring police to patrol the halls have no tangible positive results. Policies of “Zero Tolerance” (severe consequence for any behavior defined as dangerous such as bullying or carrying a weapon) rely on exclusionary measures (suspension, expulsion) that have long-term negative effects.
Anti bullying programs strive to put young people onto a path that sends them in the direction of success in school, strong social ties, and productive lives. This path also lifts them above failure, violence and ultimately prison.

Our Anti-Bullying school program message

As professional BMX Stunt riders we need to stay healthy; we need to be fit, eat right and exercise. By demonstrating that a healthy mind and body can help you achieve great things, students recognize to focus on their personal talents rather than feeling tough just by bullying others. Our team demonstrates during the bullying school assemblies that any negative behavior, whether using drugs or bullying, can jeopardize the focus necessary to achieve personal goals. Education, character, and self esteem also play a big part in what we do. When you find something you like to do, your self-esteem and confidence builds and the same focus and the drive is put towards achieving that goal and not towards bullying other students.

Hi Dennis,

Thank you so much for the great job at our school last week. The students and teachers were talking about it for several days afterwards. The students clearly understood your message: wear a helmet, if you're happy with your life and yourself you can stay drug-free, if you work hard you can be successful (and even make a living off of your hobby!). Thank you also for the generous performance with ramps. The stunts were AMAZING. You guys ROCK.

Bullying and Crime Prevention

There is some link over time between bullying and violent crime. Prevention methods aim to improve the social and friendship skills of the victim and the empathy of the bully and to improve adult supervision and "whole-school" environments. A “whole school” approach which enlists the entire school in a number of ways is more likely to be effective than programs that address bullying from only one or two directions.

While approaches that simply crack down on individual bullies are seldom effective, when there is a school-wide commitment to end bullying, it can be reduced by up to 50%. One approach that has been shown to be effective focuses on changing school and classroom climates by: raising awareness about bullying, increasing teacher and parent involvement and supervision, forming clear rules and strong social norms against bullying, and providing support and protection for all students.
